On August 6th, 2014, the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the AS CR, v. v. i., (IMG) opened a public collection aimed to help 14-year-old Katareeya Epp, who is suffering from a severe form of cancer. Her parents are employed in the IMG (project BIOCEV).

Because Katareeya originates from a “third country”, namely, Australia, according to the Czech legislation she is not entitled to healthcare support from the public healthcare insurance.

Welcome to the Website of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic,

public non-university research institution, which comprises a system of scientific institutes. It conducts its activities in accord with Act No. 283/1992 Coll., On the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ASCR), and other legal regulations. Research conducted by the ASCR endeavours to advance knowledge on an international scale while however respecting the current needs of Czech society. The supreme autonomous body of the ASCR is the Academy Assembly. The executive body of the ASCR is the Academy Council with the President of the ASCR at its head. Its permanent advisory body is the Council for Sciences, which deals with the scientific policy of the ASCR. These all-academic bodies are always elected for four-year periods.

Unique interactive exhibition “60 Years of CERN” at the ASCR

17 Sep 2014

The largest international research centre for particle physics, which operates the largest accelerator in the world, the LHC – is celebrating the 60th year since its foundation this year in September. Its official name is the “European Organization for Nuclear Research”, but it came into the awareness of the public rather under the acronym CERN (from French Conseil Européen pour la recherche nucléaire). The noteworthy interactive exhibition, is open to the public at no charge at the headquarters of the ASCR from 2nd to 25th September 2014, on working days from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

World premiere performance of the original version of Dvořák’s opera Alfred

18 Sep 2014

/sys/galerie-obrazky/news-2014/140916-svetova-premiera-puvodniho-zneni-dvorakovy-opery-alfred.jpg

An extraordinary cultural event was held on 17th September 2014 as part of the music festival Dvořák’s Prague: The world premiere performance of Dvořák’s first opera, Alfred, was performed in the original version with German text. Despite the fact that Antonín Dvořák is one of the most well-known composers worldwide, many of his compositions are rarely performed. In case of this realisation of Alfred, more than dramaturgical decisions were required. Musicians, producers, and also musicologists have taken part in this ambitious project.

In July 2014, research of the Institute of Archaeology in Prague continued in the areas of the Basilica of St Lawrence at Vyšehrad. The research that has provided very interesting information in the area of early medieval sacral architecture was financially supported by the Magistrate of the Capital City of Prague, the royal collegiate chapter at Vyšehrad, Institute of Archaeology of the ASCR in Prague, v. v. i., and the Prague Archaeological Fund. The systematic research of the Institute of Archaeology in Prague, which has been devoted to Vyšehrad in Prague for several decades now, continued this year.

Researchers from the Institute of Physics ASCR realize an efficient spin-charge converter

Current information technologies are either charge-based or spin-based. Semiconductor microprocessors are prime examples among the large variety of charge-based devices. They utilize the possibility offered by semiconductors to easily electrically manipulate and detect their electronic charge states representing the zeros and ones. Spin-based devices operate on an entirely distinct principle.

Last step before full genome sequence
The International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC) published today in the international journal Science a draft sequence of the bread wheat genome. The chromosome-based draft provides new insight into the structure, organization, and evolution of the large, complex genome of the world’s most widely grown cereal crop. The genetic blueprint of the wheat genome was obtained using the chromosome-based strategy developed by research team of Jaroslav Doležel, Professor at the Institute of Experimental Botany AS CR.

A current trend of modern biomedical research is the attempt to minimalize experiments on animals like mice or chickens and where it is possible to replace them with developmentally simpler model organisms, but it is a necessary precondition that some basic cellular and physiological processes are evolutionarily conserved with these organisms, by which the similarity with the processes taking place in more complex organisms is preserved. One such biological model is the aquarium fish, the zebrafish, named for its zebra-like stripes.

Ultraviolet light enables to find white-nose syndrome in bats

Scientists working to understand the devastating bat disease known as white-nose syndrome (WNS) now have a new, non-lethal tool to identify bats with WNS lesions —ultraviolet, or UV, light. If long-wave UV light is directed at the wings of bats with white-nose syndrome, it produces a distinctive orange-yellow fluorescence. This orange-yellow glow corresponds directly with microscopic skin lesions that are the current “gold standard” for diagnosing white-nose syndrome in bats.
