Diffusion of a tagged particle in open single-file systems

Abstract: Diffusion of particles in narrow channels where particles cannot pass each other (the single-file diffusion) naturally occurs in systems like zeolites or narrow biological pores. Due to the interparticle hard-core interaction the diffusion of one specific particle (a tagged particle or a tracer) among interacting ones is slowed down significantly as compared to the unconstrained Brownian motion. In the seminar I will present an exactly solvable model for the single-file diffusion in open systems with variable number of particles. New physical effects emerging due to both the interparticle entropic repulsion and the presence of the boundaries will be discussed in the long-time limit. They include nontrivial dynamical exponents which depend on the initial order of the tagged particle in the channel and/or the subdiffusive dynamics of the tracer in the thermodynamic limit characterized by the generalized diffusion coefficient which is different from that reported for the closed infinite homogeneous system.
