The Institute was established in 1959 as the successor of the Laboratory for High-Molecular-Weight Substances, and from 1957 it became a part of the former Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences.
The research work of the Institute covers practically all aspects of polymer science - polymer synthesis, physical chemistry of polymers, polymer physics, and polymer materials. The research aims to study relations between the structure and properties of macromolecular compounds enabling the development of polymers with required properties which find applications in industry, medicine, biochemistry, agriculture and ecology, and to possibly design polymer production technologies. Both basic and applied research projects are dealt with at the Institute.
