Assoc. Prof. J. Doležel obtained his MSc. degree from the University of Agriculture in Brno in 1978 and PhD. degree from the Institute of Experimental Botany (IEB), Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1983. He obtained his DSc. degree from IEB, The Czech Academy of Sciences (the CAS) in 2001. He was appointed Associate Professor at Palacký University in Olomouc (PU) in 2001. Since 1983 he has been working as a researcher and later as the Head of the Laboratory of Molecular Cytogenetics and Cytometry, which he has founded. In 1985–1986 he left for postdoctoral fellowship in ENEA (Rome, Italy). In 1997 he was appointed Head of the Olomouc Reach Centre of IEB. He has been teaching at PU since 1992, he lectured in more than 20 specialized courses abroad and supervised 15 PhD students.
His research focuses on hereditary information of plants, its organization and changes, which accompanied evolution of plants and origin of new species. With his team he developed new methods to facilitate the analysis of complex plant genomes and participates in several international consortia aiming at sequencing genomes of important plants. He served as principal investigator (PI) and Co-PI of over 20 research projects funded by GAČR, MŠMT, NAZV, NSF, USDA and EU. He has published over 180 papers in scientific journals, almost 40 chapters in scientific books, and edited two scientific books. His publications have been cited more than 4800 times (h-index: 37).
He is a member of editorial boards of four international scientific journals, four scientific societies and in 2001 he co-founded the Czech Society for Analytical Cytology, which he chaired in 2007–2011. In 2007–2012 he was a member and co-chairmen of the Board of IEB. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Board of the Institute of Biophysics the CAS and since 2013 he has been a member of the Board of the Biology Centre the CAS. Since 2007 he has been a member of the Academy Assembly the CAS. He received the Award of the Learned Society of the Czech Republic in 1999 and he was elected full member of the Society in 2004. In 2012 he received the Academic Award “Praemium Academiae” from the CAS.
