Completed project

Czech Political Parties after Ten Years

Project duration:
2002 - 2004

The aim of the project was to learn and analyse characteristics, structure and functioning of Parliamentary and other relevant political parties in relation to their functioning in the Parliament, at lower levels of an organization structure, and, on the other side, in relation to European political parties. The relation of political parties to the civic society and its entities as well as to the State was also taken into account.

The text analyses the candidate selection procedure in the political parties before the elections to the European Parliament. It focuses on the four main Czech political parties: ČSSD, KDU-ČSL, KSČM and ODS. Following a description of the selection procedure based on written documents (party statutes and statutes on candidate selection procedure), the authors analyse candidate selection using the classification framework established by Gideon Rahat and Reuven Hazan.

The paper analyses the candidate selection procedure in political parties before the elections to the European Parliament. It focuses on the four main Czech political parties: ČSSD, KDU-ČSL, KSČM and ODS. Findings from the analysis of written documents are compared with the results from a questionnaire survey among the candidates. The candidate selection in ČSSD and ODS was centralised around the narrow central executive with a candidacy closed only to party members.
