Simplified Admissions Procedure for Students Applying to the Economic Theory Master's Program at IES

The admissions procedure for Visiting Master’s (formerly known as the Joint Masters in Economics) is simplified for students who apply and are accepted to the Economic Theory Master’s program at the Institute of Economic Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, Prague (IES). Please note that the IES Economic Theory Master's program is taught in Czech only.

If you are admitted to the Master’s program at IES and intend to take the Visiting Master's option, you should email the following documents to CERGE-EI This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. :

  • the Application Supplement
  • your Bachelor’s degree transcript
  • Statement of motivation: 1000-2000 word statement in English explaining your academic background, interests and career goals, and how the Visiting Master’s scheme will help you meet your objectives. Please see the Statement of Motivation Guidelines.

The application deadline for Visiting Master’s from IES is August 20, 2015.

In early September, you will be notified whether or not you are admitted to the Visiting Master’s scheme at CERGE-EI. In the past, all students who have successfully completed the Bachelor's degree in Economics at IES have been admitted.

Admissions Procedure for Students from Other Universities

Applications are considered upon request. There is no application deadline but please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  at least two months before your planned visit. You are welcome to join us for the whole academic year, for one semester or for a shorter period.

When applying you should:

1. Apply and be admitted to your preferred Master’s program (in Economics or a closely related field) at another university, and arrange the conditions of your Visiting Master’s stay at CERGE-EI, including the recognition of grades.

2. Send the following documents in electronic form to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. :

  • Your letter of admission to the Master’s program at your university.
  • Application supplement indicating that you wish to enroll in the Visiting Master’s scheme.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Statement of motivation: 1000-2000 word statement in English explaining your academic background, interests and career goals, and how the Visiting Master’s scheme will help you meet your objectives. Please see the Statement of Motivation Guidelines
  • Bachelor’s degree transcript.
  • A notary-verified copy of your Bachelor's degree diploma. If your diploma has not yet been issued when you are applying for the Visiting Master’s scheme, please submit an official confirmation from your university saying that there are no obstacles to your graduation and that you are expected to graduate, e.g., by the end of June of this year (specifying when the diploma will be issued).

  • Other relevant documents that may increase your chances of being admitted to the Visiting Master’s scheme, such as additional study records, certificates, diplomas, etc.
  • You are encouraged to submit TOEFL, IELTS, or other certified English language exam scores, as well as GRE, GMAT, or other proficiency test scores.

3. Send the following documents in paper copy to the address below:

  • Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with your academic background, provided in sealed envelopes with the recommender's signature written across the seal (form available here, download to fill in electronically).

Upon submitting your application, it will be considered by the Deputy Director for Graduate Studies. You will be notified whether or not you are admitted to the Visiting Master’s scheme at CERGE-EI within a month at the latest.
