Tuition and Financial Support

There is  no application fee to the PhD in Economics program. Nearly all students are awarded full tuition waiver for the entire duration of their PhD program. Students also typically receive financial support toward living costs based on their previous education (degree level) and qualifications.

Nearly all students are awarded full tuition waiver for the entire duration of their PhD program.

Most students who are charged tuition for the first two years, the amount is set on an individual basis and is up to 16,400 USD per academic year. Tuition must be paid each semester by the first day of classes. Financial Support for the PhD in Economics Program

Students typically receive financial support toward living costs based on their previous education (degree level) and qualifications. Masters degree holders are usually given full financial support. There is no need to apply separately for financial support.

Stipends

- A stipend is paid from the first to the fourth year of study. Fifth-year students may receive funding in the form of a salary (as they are usually employed as Junior Researchers at the Economics Institute or at CERGE-EI).
- The total support package is reviewed each year and is set at a level that enables students to afford a dormitory space, to eat in the student cafeterias, and to cover reasonable incidental expenses in Prague.
- The package is neither intended nor sufficient for a student to support a family while studying at CERGE-EI.
- The level of the performance stipend rises over time (the exact amount depends on academic performance and other study requirements, such as fulfilling assistantship duties).
- The stipend is paid monthly in Czech crowns (CZK).

STIPEND

1ST year

Standard amount approximately 7,100 USD per year 
This amount may increase up to 7,700 USD per year if the student shows outstanding performance or be lowered to the minimum amount of 5,000 USD per year if the student does not fulfill academic requirements.

2ND, 3RD year

Standard amount approximately 7,700 USD per year
This amount may increase up to 8,300 USD per year if the student shows outstanding performance or be lowered to the minimum amount of 5,000 USD per year if the student does not fulfill academic requirements.

4TH year

Standard amount 6,000 - 7,700 USD per year *
This amount may increase up to 11,000 USD per year on the basis of outstanding performance or be lowered to the minimum amount of 3,500 - 5,300 USD per year if the student does not fulfill academic requirements.

* In addition to the standard amount, most students in the fourth year receive an Advanced Student Fellowship, such as a Teaching Fellowship (2,400 USD per course taught).                                         

Insurance

All students from NON-EU countries are required to have insurance coverage for medical expenses while in the Czech Republic. CERGE-EI covers the Comprehensive Medical Insurance for its 1st-4th year full-time students. Comprehensive Medical Insurance meets all the conditions of the Act on the Residence of Foreigners on the Territory of the Czech Republic.

Reimbursement

CERGE-EI also reimburses part of the city travel pass for students who are older than 26, and covers the residence permit fee for 1st-4th year full-time students.

Accommodation stipend

All full time Charles University students are eligible to apply for the Charles University accommodation stipend that helps to cover living expenses.

Financial support for students with a Bachelor's degree

The financial conditions described above apply only to students who earned a Masters degree or its equivalent prior to coming to CERGE-EI. Financial support for students with a Bachelors degree or equivalent will be determined on an individual basis. Students who have only a Bachelors degree may want to consider applying to the Visiting Master's in Economics scheme.

Visegrad Scholarship Program

Applicants from selected countries (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine) are encouraged to apply for additional scholarship at Visegrad Scholarship Program.  

The International Visegrad Fund offers master’s and post-master’s schol­ar­ships awarded to selected schol­ars for 1 or 2 semes­ters.

Applicants whose cur­rent (i.e., at the time of apply­ing) uni­ver­sity is far­ther than 1,500 km from CERGE-EI institute are also eli­gi­ble also for a one-time travel grant.
