*Dewey Decimal Classification is a decimal system developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876 which uses Arabic numerals to represent the subject category of a publication. The decimal number, together with an alphabetical suffix (first three letters of the author's surname, or first three letters of the first full title word), is used as a location mark by which books are arranged on the shelves. Dewey Decimal Classification consists of ten main classes numbered 000-900.
