The Institute was created in 1954 from the Department of Physiology, founded in 1953 within the framework of the Institute of Biology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Pursuant to Act No. 341/2005 Coll., the Institute became a public research institution as of 1 January 2007.

As a centre for basic medical and biological research, the Institute is primarily concerned with the following fields of research:
  • A range of subjects in neurophysiology, from the mechanism of neurotransmitter release to their membrane receptors, to the regulation of body functions at the level of the whole organism.
  • In cardiovascular physiology, work is concentrated on developmental aspects of the contractile function of the myocardium, experimental hypertension and physiology of the epithelium with a special emphasis on the role of proteins and cell membranes, and on the search for genetic markers of some diseases, such as, e.g., hypertension, diabetes, among others.
  • In molecular and cell physiology, on subjects connected with cell metabolism, transport of high-energy substances and signal transduction which contribute to the elucidation of cell processes and intercellular interaction.
