Introduction to Magnetic Circular Dichroism and its application in magnetic semiconductor

Seminar Monday, 27/04/2015 13:00

Speakers: Prof. Hua Shu Hsu (Department of Applied Physics, National Pingtung University, Taiwan)

Presented in English
Organisers: Department of Optical Materials

Energy dependent magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and spectra, from which the difference between the absorptions of left and right circularly polarized light at specific energies can be determined, can provide valuable information of the spin polarized density of states and help identify the origin of the ferromagnetism of semiconductor.

This talk will address two examples: an analysis of MCD spectra of the ferromagnetic C:ZnO sample[1], and a sizeable MCD at the σ-σ* gap transition (~5.5 eV) in Co-doped amorphous carbon films[2]. An overview of the basic MCD ideas underlying this research and several applications to magnetic semiconductor and/or magnetic nanocomposites will be presented.
