Priorities of the Austrian Presidency in 2006

During the first six months of 2006, Austria will hold the EU Presidency for the second time. During the first term of 2006 Austria will chair all meetings of the European Council and the Council of Ministers, and approximately 250 meetings of committees and working groups of civil servants. All in all Austrian officials will chair about 2000 EU meetings during these six months. During the presidency Austria will represent the EU in the world, will be its spokesman in summit meetings and international conferences and will be Europe’s face and voice in the world in general.
The main priorities of the Austrian Presidency have been set in the Multiannual Strategic Programme 2004-06 of the European Council, prepared by the six Presidencies of Ireland, Netherlands, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, Austria and Finland. On the basis of this programme Austria and Finland, which hold the two Presidencies in 2006, will establish a common detailed Working Programme for 2006 which will in case of Austria focus on:

boosting economic growth and employment in Europe

securing and enhancing the European social model

strengthening the trust of the citizens in the European project

giving proof of the European Union as a strong and reliable partner in the world.
