The Prizes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic
The awards of the AS CR honour extraordinary results in the field of research and development. Seven scientists or teams of scientists were awarded the Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic this year.
Otto Wichterle Premium
The Incentive Otto Wichterle Premium is addressed to young scientists. Twenty four young researchers were awarded the prize this year.
Vojtěch Náprstek Medal
Three publicists or scientists were awarded the Vojtěch Náprstek Medal for their activities in the popularization of science.
ETHICS
On the threshold of ethics and science
Top Czech scientists discussed the question: "Scientific and ethical questions of cloning”.
Moral uncertainity and teaching ethics
At the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology at Rio de Janeiro last December Prof. Szawarski (University of Warsaw) made a presentation. A Czech translation of his speech is offered.

Long time conserving of paintings at the Karštejn castle was the programme of a colloquium at the refectory of the convent Na Slovanech at May.
J. W. Cronin and high energy physics
American nuclear physicists J. W. Cronin was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1980. He visited the Czech Republic in May and expressed to Czech scientists his appreciation for their participation in the Pierre Auger project.
