Mezi raným a vrcholným středověkem

Rozsáhlý sborník vznikl při příležitosti šedesátých narozenin doc. PhDr. Pavla Kouřila, CSc., archeologa středověku a ředitele Archeologického ústavu AV ČR, Brno, v. v. i. Je proto věnován třem zásadním tématům dějin středověké střední Evropy: odkazu nejstarších slovanských státních útvarů, každodennímu životu středověkého člověka a prostředí dobových mocenských elit. 
Kniha nabízí odborníkům, studentům i všem dalším zájemcům o historii středověku celkem 37 příspěvků, na kterých se podílelo na 45 autorů z českých zemí i ze zahraničí. Vedle převážně českých studií zde tedy nechybí ani texty v polštině, slovenštině a němčině, obecnou dostupnost prezentovaných poznatků zajišťují obsáhlá anglická resumé spolu s úvodními abstrakty a klíčovými slovy. Tisku ve formátu B5 a nárokům na kvalitní reprodukci obrazového aparátu (na 270 většinou barevných vyobrazení) odpovídá vnější úprava publikace s pevnou vazbou, laminovanými deskami a křídovým papírem. 
Po úvodní, jubilantovi věnované impresi z pera M. Wihody přináší sborník kompletní obsáhlou bibliografii doc. dr. P. Kouřila, zahrnující na 250 titulů. Následují tři kompaktní tematické bloky textů o atraktivních historických fenoménech českých zemí a středoevropského prostoru. Prvý oddíl, nazvaný Stará Morava jako místo k zamyšlení, zavádí čtenáře do dob vzniku a rozmachu staroslovanské společnosti 6.–10. století. Druhý tematický celek se zaobírá každodenním životem středověkého člověka 11.–15. století v jeho nejrůznějších aspektech, formách a proměnách, oporou pro vykreslení všedních i svátečních okamžiků středověku jsou tu zejména archeologické nálezy. Třetí oddíl pod titulem Svět moci, války a urozených přibližuje středověké válečnictví, hrady a opevnění, zbraně i zbroj, vládní a politickou praxi, hned několik autorů se zaobírá samotnými zbraněmi (meče, dýky), zbrojí a jezdeckou výbavou středověkého válečníka.
Sborník Mezi raným a vrcholným středověkem nabízí celistvý průhled do světa středověku střední Evropy. K celé řadě jeho textů se budou odborníci i laici nepochybně trvale vracet pro jejich metodickou nebo pramennou hodnotu.
 

Jiří Doležel – Martin Wihoda (ed.), Between the Early and High Middle Ages. To Pavel Kouřil on his sixtieth birthday – from his friends, colleagues and students. Brno,  Institute of Archaeology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Brno 2012, 686 pages. 
This extensive anthology was created to mark the sixtieth birthday of doc. PhDr. Pavel Kouřil, CSc., mediaeval archaeologist and Director of the Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Brno. It is therefore devoted to three major topics relating to the history of mediaeval Central Europe: the legacy of the oldest Slavic states, the day-to-day life of mediaeval man, and the milieu of the mediaeval power elites.
This book presents professionals, students and anyone interested in mediaeval history a total of 37 articles written by 45 authors from the Czech Republic and abroad. In addition to the predominantly Czech studies, it also contains texts in Polish, Slovak and German; the findings presented here are made generally more accessible by extensive English résumés together with introductory précis and keywords. The outer cover of the publication, with its fixed binding, laminated plates and coated paper, matches the high standard of the contents, printed in B5 format and containing high quality images (with 270 mostly colour illustrations). 
After the introductory foreword devoted to Pavel Kouřil to mark his sixtieth birthday, written by M. Wihoda, the anthology presents the complete comprehensive bibliography of doc. PhDr. P. Kouřil, encompassing some 250 titles. This is followed by three compact themed blocks on the fascinating historical phenomena of Bohemia and Central Europe. The first section, entitled Old Moravia as a Place for Reflection, introduces the reader to the time of the creation and expansion of Slavic society from the 6th to the 10th centuries. The second themed section is devoted to the day-to-day life of mediaeval man from the 11th to the 15th centuries in all its aspects, forms and transformations; archaeological finds in particular are presented to depict everyday moments and festive occasions of the Middle Ages. The third section, entitled The World of Power, War and the Nobility, describes mediaeval warfare, castles and fortifications, weapons and armour, government and political policies, with several authors focusing on the actual weapons (swords, daggers), armour and riding equipment used by the mediaeval warrior.

Der umfangreiche Sammelband entstand anlässlich des 60. Geburtstags von Doz. Dr. phil. Pavel Kouřil, CSc., Mittelalterarchäologe und Direktor des Archäologischen Instituts der Akademie der Wissenschaften der Tschechischen Republik, Brno. Er ist daher drei grundsätzlichen Themen der Geschichte des mittelalterlichen Europa gewidmet: dem Vermächtnis der ältesten slawischen Staatsgebilde, dem Alltagsleben des mittelalterlichen Menschen und dem Milieu der zeitgenössischen Machteliten. 
Das Buch bietet Fachgelehrten, Studenten wie auch allen anderen an der Geschichte des Mittelalters Interessierten insgesamt 37 Beiträge, an denen sich rund 45 Autoren aus den böhmischen Ländern und aus dem Ausland beteiligten. Neben den überwiegend tschechischen Studien findet man hier auch Texte in Polnisch, Slowakisch und Deutsch. Die Allgemeinverständlichkeit der präsentierten Erkenntnisse wird durch ein umfassendes englisches Resümee, einschließlich einführender Abstrakta und Schlüsselbegriffe, gewährleistet. Dem Druck im B5-Format und den Ansprüchen an eine hochwertige Reproduktion des Bilderapparats (rund 270 überwiegend farbige Abbildungen) entspricht die äußere Gestaltung der Publikation mit festem Einband, laminierten Deckeln und Kreidepapier. 
Nach einer dem Jubilar gewidmeten Eingangsimpression aus der Feder M. Wihodas bietet der Sammelband die komplette umfangreiche Bibliografie von Doz. Dr. P. Kouřil, welche rund 250 Titel umfasst. Es folgen drei kompakte Themenblöcke mit Texten über attraktive historische Phänomene der böhmischen Länder und des mitteleuropäischen Raums. Der erste Teil mit dem Titel Altmähren als ein nachdenkenswerter Ort entführt den Leser in die Zeit der Entstehung und Blüte der altslawischen Gesellschaft des 6.–10. Jahrhunderts. Der zweite Themenkomplex befasst sich mit dem Alltagsleben des mittelalterlichen Menschen des 11.–15. Jahrhunderts in seinen unterschiedlichsten Aspekten, Formen und Übergängen. Als Anhaltspunkte für die Darstellung der Alltags- und Festtagsmomente des Mittelalters dienen hier insbesondere die archäologischen Funde. Der dritte Teil mit dem Titel Die Welt der Macht, des Krieges und der Edelleute versucht, das mittelalterliche Kriegswesen, Burgen und Festungsanlagen, Waffen und Rüstungen, die Regierungs- und politische Praxis nahezubringen. Gleich mehrere Autoren befassen sich unmittelbar mit Waffen (Schwerter, Dolche), Rüstungen und der Reiterausstattung des mittelalterlichen Kriegers.
