We have recently introduced helquats (Chem. Eur. J. 2009, 15, 1072; Chemické Listy 2011, 105, 506). These helical dications represent structural hybrids of helicenes and viologens. To exploit the emerging potential of helquats, a strategy to introduce useful functional groups onto the helquat skeleton needs to be developed. The goal of this PhD. project is to prepare a series of functionalized helquats. Furthermore, experiments towards applications of the target compounds will be designed. Our efforts in this area will be driven by a hypothesis that crossbreeding rich fields of viologens and helicenes will lead to interesting and applicable chemistry.
