What’s next in cognition of human brain
Brain Awareness Week is a series of events held around the world to increase public awareness of the brain. Top Czech scientists attracted hundreds of students and the general public with lectures as a part of the annual Brain Awareness Week that took placed in the administration building of the Czech Academy of Sciences from 14th to 16th March 2006.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH
Nature will be always ahead
The "Bird flu" crisis was the main topic of conference on The Spanish and bird flu. Should people be afraid of a disease caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs? Avian influenza viruses are highly species-specific, but have, on rare occasions, crossed the species barrier to infect humans. But if we compare the fact that about half a million people each year die from normal human flu…

Management of the top Science
The Academy of Sciences in cooperation with Max Planck Society met in the ASCR administration building for a one-day seminar about business and the management of Science. Both of them have a similar organizational structure and also the same aim.

SCIENCE AND RESEARCH
South Korea and Vietnam
Southeastern Asia is developing not only in the economic and business areas, but also in science. The costs of science to the state are higher there than in Europe. An official partner of the Academy of Sciences, namely, the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF) in January 2006 invited representatives of ASCR to Korea to become acquainted with Korean laboratories and scientific institutions.

A new book called Tour of Charles IV. in France 1377–1378 will soon appear in many book shops around the country. The author of that book is František Šmahel and we did an interview with this famous historian.

INTRODUCING PROJECTS
Innovation in Liblice
A new project, called the Centre of Innovational Education, was opened in the renovated castle Liblice. The project is financed by the European Social Fund and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs of the Czech Republic.
