Completed project

Parenthood after Partners Break Up – Parental Roles and the Identity of Divorced Mothers and Fathers

Project duration:
2004 - 2006

The subject of the project is a sociological study of parenthood in the Czech Republic after partners break up as experienced on the one hand by the mothers who have been granted custody of the child (children) and on the other hand by the fathers who lose everyday contact with their child (children). An analysis is also made of the objective and institutional conditions of motherhood and fatherhood performance after partners divorce or separate in contemporary Czech society. The project is based on a comprehensive qualitative study, the secondary analysis of quantitative data, and direct observation. The main objective of the project is to reveal the difficulties faced by mothers and fathers after divorce, to analyse their reaction to these difficulties, and to understand the strategies of behaviour they apply in this situation.

The process of the individualization of the society has already been in progress for several centuries. One of its consequences is the increase of differences among individuals, the advocacy of the individual interests instead of the collective ones and mostly the growth of the space for free choices and decisions. The second side of the increasing freedom is the growth of the insecurity. However, this process is irreversible.

Mothers as heads of one-parent families become very often the only breadwinners for their families, while still being the primary carers for their children. This leads to the worsening of the economical situation of their families. The results of my research presented in this article show further the barriers that women encounter while trying to provide for their families and the values that intervene in their work life choices.

The book presents a theoretical study and an original qualitative empirical study of fatherhood after divorce or separation. A total of 35 interviews were conducted with men with various social and educational backgrounds. It shows how contemporary fathers select between different repertoires of fatherhood and how they interpret them, and in this way they construct their own personal paternal role.
