Graduated in History from Charles University in Prague in 1983; received a CSc. (Ph.D.) in History, with a specialization in the history of Asian, African and Latin American countries, from the Oriental Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1988. Awarded the Martin Fellowship, the Harry S. Truman Research Institute, the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, 1992; Research Fellowship, Center for the Study of Nationalism, Central European University, Prague, 1993-1994; Jean Monnet Fellowship, Florence, 1994-1995; Mellon Fellowship, American Research Institute in Turkey, 1998; Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University, 1999-2000. Visiting Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, March-April 1997; Central European University, Budapest, fall 1997; University of Washington, Seattle, spring 1999; Sabanci University, Istanbul, Turkey, fall 2003. From 1988 to 1993,  Research Fellow at the Department of Middle Eastern Studies, Oriental Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague;  from 1993 to 2001 Assistant Professor and 2001-2004 Associate Professor at the Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies, Charles University, Prague; from 2004 to 2008 Program Officer to Senior Program Officer at the Russell Sage Foundation, New York. Since 2008, Head of the Turkish Studies Program and Associate Professor, Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies, Charles University, Prague, and Research Fellow at CERGE-EI.
