Katerina Dohnalova (Institute of Physics, University of Amsterdam, Science Park 904, 1018XH Amsterdam, The Netherlands)

IV-group bulk crystalline semiconductors, Diamond (C), Silicon and Germanium, all possess diamond structure and indirect bandgaps. The latter property results in very poor emission and band-edge absorption, limiting their use in optoelectronic and photonic applications. In nanocrystal form, oscillator strength is enhanced via the spatial confinement of carriers, which leads to relaxation of the k-selection rule and band-mixing.

Tue, 09/02/2016 - 10:00 - 11:30

Karel Výborný (Institute of Physics ASCR)

(A Journal Club Lecture.) The common notion that the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is proportional to magnetisation suggests that antiferromagnets with zero magnetisation should exhibit no AHE. Despite this intuition, when certain symmetries are broken, AHE was still predicted to appear in multi-sublattice antiferromagnets with zero magnetisation (such as IrMn3 or Mn3Sn). Recently, this prediction has been confirmed experimentally and the magnitude of AHE was even found to exceed that of ordinary ferromagnetic metals.
