The nonlinear transmission properties of liquid crystalline cells doped with azo dyes is discussed. It is shown that from the transmission data the characteristic quantities of the isomerization process can be deducted and in addition the order parameter of both the trans and the cis conformer in the liquid crystal can be determined. Next we discuss the surface relief formation in azo dye-functionalized side-chain polymers. A new model for the mechanism of light-induced mass-flow in polymers is proposed.
