Project: Driving of the Earth magnetosphere by ICMEs and CIRs

The leading idea of the proposal is to investigate evolution of distinct solar wind features (ICMEs and CIRs) within solar wind, their interaction with the outer magnetospheric boundaries (magnetopause and bow shock), to follow a path of resulting discontinuities through the magnetosphere up to its far tail and to estimate their effects on the geomagnetic field via modification of the magnetospheric current systems. The methodology is based on the statistical evaluation of multispacecraft observations as well as on case studies of particular events. The experimental investigations will be supported with computer modeling of the ICME evolution and global MHD modeling of the solar wind interaction with the magnetosphere. The investigation will result in a deeper understanding of the causes of enhanced geomagnetic activity.
