Impact of seizures on the developing brain

Systems important for brain excitability and its regulation mature for a long period of postnatal life.

Disturbances of a balance between excitatory and inhibitory systems might easily lead to generation of epileptic seizures. Pattern of seizures depends on maturity of individual brain structures and neurotransmitter systems. Our research is focused on developmental features of these systems and their participation in generation, spread and termination of seizure activity. Models of age-specific epileptic seizures and their pharmacological sensitivity are in the center of our attention. Results might initiate new therapeutic accesses to age-specific epileptic syndromes in pediatric patients.
