The Institute was created in 1955 from the Biophysical Laboratory of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, which was founded in 1954. Pursuant to Act No. 341/2005 Coll., the Institute became a public research institution (v. v. i.) as of 1 January 2007.
The Institute is responsible for research on the structure, function and dynamics of biological systems (biomolecules, cell organellas, cells and cell populations) using methods of molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry and bioinformatics. The research programme of the Institute of Biophysics is carried out by scientific teams organised into ten research departments and four separate research groups.
