PhD Programme in Institute of Physiology

Application for the prospective students to participate in PhD programme in our institute are opened for the academic year 2016/2017. The applicant must complete an on-line application form and select at least one department. All potential candidates will be invited to give a 10-min long presentation of their undergraduate research and will be interviewed by a PhD committee. The candidates will be informed by the end of March 2016 about the outcome of the selection process and will receive detailed information about the next steps necessary to start their PhD studies.

The Institute of Physiology provides systematic preparation for students in bachelor´s, master´s and doctoral degree programs. It cooperates with a number of Czech universities as well as prestigious international institutions. A proposal of bachelor´s and master´s thesis topics can be found on the Institute‘s website as well as in information systems of the relevant faculties, where the staff of the Institute act as trainers. Institute of Physiology employees are the main trainers for more than 90 graduate students. Postgraduate study is always organized by the Specialist Board, and must be completed with a state examination and a thesis defense at the relevant college.

Study program

The postgraduate study program applies to students enrolled in postgraduate studies at any Czech university where their supervisor (or supervisor-specialist) is an employee of the Institute of Physiology, and who have at least part of their research during the study carried out at the premises of the Institute.

The study program includes:

• Open Day for those interested in Ph.D. study

• Opening course in physiological methods for beginner students

• Advancement Report - a seminar where the students prepare, during their 3rd year of study, a presentation on the achieved results and the final goals of their dissertation

• Bureš lectures - lectures by internationally acclaimed scientists, including the possibility of discussion with the invited scientist

• External meeting of Ph.D. students

• Internal doctoral thesis defense before committing to the relevant Doctoral Committee

• The first author minireview in Physiological Research, under the conditions defined by the magazine (Review Articles of Young Investigators in Physiological Research)

Study specializations

Most of the postgraduate students of the Institute of Physiology are involved in the project "Doctoral studies in biomedicine", which is coordinated by the Academy of Sciences and Charles University. Involvement in a specific Specialist Board depends on the individual supervisors and consultation with them. Students of other universities, however, such as University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, may also attend postgraduate study at the Institute of Physiology.

Students benefits

Salaries are provided according to the financial means of the scientific department of which the Ph.D. student is a member. Ph.D. students in full-time studies can be employed up to half-time through institutional funds. Students can make use of all the benefits arising from employment at the Institute of Physiology which are in accordance with the law.
