The institute evolved from the Computing Centre of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. The Centre was founded in 1975 as a facility serving the institutes of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. In 1980 it was transformed into a scientific institute of the Academy. The present English name of the Institute was adopted in 1993.

Research work of the Institute focuses mainly on theoretical and applied areas of computer science, artificial intelligence and computational mathematics, especially on:
  • methods of applied linear algebra and of optimisation, errors-in-variables modelling and modelling and simulations of problems in elastoplasticity
  • logical and probabilistic foundations of computer science, computational models and complexity, software architectures, soft computing and data mining
  • theory and application of the artificial neural networks, non-linear modelling, time series prediction, biologically motivated neural networks
  • biomedical informatics, biomedical statistics, epidemiology, genetics, cardiology.

The Institute also actively participates in graduate studies at the following faculties: Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Charles University, Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University, Faculty of Nuclear and Physical Engineering of the Czech Technical University, Faculty of Mechatronics and Interdisciplinary Engineering Studies, Technical University of Liberec.
