Abstract: This talk will wander through some developments from my group related to topological character of transition metal oxides (TMO). Certainly spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a central feature, specifically the interplay between SOC and strong correlation effects as treated within density functional theory. Chern insulating phases within the "generalized phase diagram" of two TMO structural classes will be described.

The magnetic states of nanostructures are of high interest for information storage and quantum information processing. This has triggered the search for the smallest possible magnets. In devices, electrodes have to be attached to them for readout and manipulation of the magnetic quantum states. This corresponds to their adsorption onto conducting surfaces.

Is there any deep reason of using the new (and trendy) words “terahertz” and “multi-terahertz” when the traditional and well-established terms of far-infrared and mid-infrared have been available for decades? The answer is that the terms (multi-)terahertz are closely connected to specific quasi-optical techniques of coherent generation and detection of radiation, which provide some added value compared to “classical” experimental methods. Among others they allow one to observe directly the oscillations of terahertz light in time during various interactions.

Dr. Dennis R. Schaart (Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Delft, The Netherlands )

The use of time-of-flight (TOF) information in positron emission tomography (PET) significantly improves the effective sensitivity, enabling better image quality and reduction of scan times, dose and costs. PET manufacturers have recently released systems with 325-400 ps FWHM coincidence resolving time (CRT). Moreover, CRT’s well below 100 ps FWHM have been achieved using short (< 5 mm) scintillation crystals coupled to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs).
