The paper traces the contexts and processes of gender inequality and gender discrimination in the Czech labour market. The primary innovation of the research is the use of qualitative sociological methodology. Quantitative sociological research alone has thus far been unable to uncover the factors, contexts and actors´ understandings of gender inequality and discrimination. The research applies the biographic-narrative method focused on work biography and its interconnection with the life story. The paper shows that using qualitative data it is possible to find interconnections between different levels of the society and variables. Compared to quantitative analysis, using qualitative sample of women’s biographies it is possible to carry historical analysis of structural conditions for working women and to study individual strategies and their patterns according to age, education and family situation at the same time to get a denser picture of the social problem.
