Jiri Hlinka (Department of Dielectrics )

Interesting ferromagnetic ferroelectric system permitting skyrmionic spin structure phases has also a peculiar ferroelectric transition. We shall briefly report about theoretical and experimental studies of the lattice-dynamics aspects of this phase transition.

Seminar / Tue, 14/06/2016 - 15:00 - 16:00

Roman Martoňák (Department of Experimental Physics, Comenius University in Bratislava, Mlynská dolina F2, 842 48 Bratislava, Slovakia)

Abstract: We study the evolution of structural and electronic properties of layered semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, MoX2 (X = S, Se, Te) upon increasing pressure, employing ab initio DFT calculations in combination with metadynamics and evolutionary search. We found that in MoS2 a layer sliding structural transition occurs at 20 GPa, converting the 2Hc stacking stable at ambient pressure to the 2Ha stacking (known in 2H-NbSe2)[1].

The Dvořák Lecture / Wed, 15/06/2016 - 16:00 - 18:00

Prof. Marco Cavaglià (Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Mississippi, USA)

The 8th Dvořák Lecture

In 1916 Albert Einstein demonstrated that the theory of General Relativity allows for wave-like, space time perturbations propagating with the speed of light. Two years later, he calculated his famous quadrupole formula, describing how these “gravitational” waves can be generated. However, due to the extreme weakness of gravity, detecting gravitational waves seemed an impossible task. They even became a matter of controversy with Einstein himself becoming convinced they did not exist.

Seminar / Thu, 16/06/2016 - 10:00 - 11:00

Lukáš Ondič (Fyzikální ústav AV ČR, v.v.i.; Cikrovarnická 10; Praha 6)

Tightly focused electromagnetic radiation (an optical beam) can be used to capture a small particle without physically touching it. This technique, which has led to a Nobel prize in physics and a whole new industry in biotechnology, could allow for example to explore new physical regimes when it is combined with cooling the particle to its quantum ground state.

Seminář ELI Beamlines / Fri, 17/06/2016 - 14:00 - 16:00

Martin P. Stockli (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN 37830, USA)

The Spallation Neutron Source became in 2007 the brightest pulsed Neutron Source and by now is ~8 times brighter than the second leading pulsed Neutron Source. It took years of learning and understanding issues and find better solutions or work arounds. After an introduction into the workings of the Spallation Neutron Source and its Frontend, we will discuss some of the discoveries made and exploited for the success of SNS, including the record breaking H- beam currents and the record breaking service cycles of the SNS H- ion source.

Seminar / Tue, 28/06/2016 - 15:00

H. Turčičová, O. Novák (Dolní Břežany)

Seminář ELI Beamlines / Sun, 21/08/2016 - Fri, 26/08/2016

ELI Beamlines announce that the ELI Beamlines and HiLASE Summer School (ELISS 2016) will be held in Dolní Břežany near Prague, The Czech Republic from Sunday August 21st, 2016 to Friday August 26th, 2016.

The summer school targets students around the world to participate in seminars lead by distinguished academics and researchers. This year ELI Beamlines Summer school will be located in a new ELI Beamlines building in Dolní Břežany near Prague.
