The 29th edition of the Symposium on Fusion Technology (SOFT 2016) will be held for the first time in Prague, from the 5th to 9th September 2016 in the Prague Congress Centre.
The event is organized jointly by the Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academy of
Sciences (CAS) and the Research Centre Rez, two principal institutes engaged in the research of
thermonuclear fusion and fusion technologies in the Czech Republic. The biennial Symposium on
Fusion Technology is the leading conference in this field in Europe and it regularly attracts more
than 800 scientists, engineers, industry representatives and exhibitors from all over the world and
focuses on the latest developments on running and planned fusion experiments.
This year, the symposium will take place in Prague for the first time and is expected
participation of more than 1 000 scientists. Symposium on Fusion Technology includes scientific
presentations and posters, as well as an exhibition of industrial companies and research
institutions.
The international meeting is dedicated to the latest findings, results and plans in the issue
of technologies for thermonuclear fusion. The meeting session will initiate the President
of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Prof. Jiri Drahos, the Mayor of the Prague Adriana Krnáčová and
the Deputy Minister Prof. Stanislav Štech (Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports). The
opening will be also attended by the Director General of the
ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental
Reactor), Prof. Bernard Bigot, who will be a guest of Czech television (Hyde Park
Civilization).
During the first day of the conference the
SOFT Innovation Prize 2016 will be
awarded. EURATOM Fusion Energy Department awarded this prize since 2014. The programme of the
European Atomic Energy Community for research and training (EURATOM) is
established for the period 2014 to 2018, and complements the Framework Programme for Research and
Innovation, the Horizon 2020 programme. EURATOM Fusion Energy department launched in 2014 a
European Prize for Innovation in Fusion with the name SOFT Innovation Prize. It is organized in
association with the Symposium on Fusion Technology (SOFT) biennial conference. The objective of
the prize is to reward outstanding researchers or industries who try to find new solutions,
possibly with wider applications, to the huge challenges of fusion.
