- EMS Protest against the arrest of Betül Tanbay
The EMS issued a statement on 16th November 2018, strongly protesting the detention by the Turkish authorities of our Vice-President Elect Professor Betül Tanbay on 16th November. We are pleased to report that Betül has subsequently been released from custody. However we continue to have grave concerns about her situation, and are monitoring the situation. We are grateful for the many expressions of support and solidarity we have received from the community.

- Call for EMS prize nominations
At the 8th European Congress in Portoroz the traditional prizes will be awarded: ten EMS Prizes for young mathematicians, as well as the Felix Klein and Otto Neugebauer Prizes. The prize committees have been finalised and the community is encouraged to propose strong candidates for these distinctions.

- Call for 9ECM bids
National societies are encouraged to consider bidding to host the 9th European Congress in 2024. Preliminary bids should reach the Executive Committee not later than 28 February 2019. The Executive Committee will consider these outline bids, and invite one or more of the bids to be set out in greater detail. The final decision will be taken at the next Council meeting at Bled on 4-5 July 2020.
- The EMS position on the European Commission’s Plan S
The EMS issued a statement concerning the European Commission intentions regarding Open Access. We are aware that publications have their cost, but any change to the model must be done in a balanced way taking into account the interests of all the involved parties. This is not the case presently, which is why the EMS has supported a recent complaint to the European Ombudsman:

- Transformation of the EMS Publishing House
Seventeen years after its foundation, the EMS-PH holds a firm position in the landscape of mathematical publishing. It was initially the work of Thomas Hintermann, to whom the whole society is immensely grateful. With Thomas now approaching his well deserved retirement, a new chapter will start. At its recent meeting the EMS Executive committee approved legal documents which would open the way for a transformation of the EMS-PH, allowing it to serve even better the needs of the community. Further details will be released in the coming months.
- Call For EMS Summer Schools In Applied Mathematics (ESSAM)
The EMS Applied Mathematics Committee announces that the call is still open until 20th December 2018, for any summer school in the area of Applied Mathematics organized during 2019 and open to international participants.

European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB)
- The 11th European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB 2018) was held in Lisbon, Portugal, July 23-27, 2018. It welcomed more than seven hundred participants from 80 countries.
- The celebration of the year of Mathematical Biology is in full swing at the Institute Mittag-Leffler. They have had months dedicated to morphogenesis in September, collective dynamics in October, population dynamics in November, while December is dedicated to cancer. Celebrations include the Math Bio day, 10/10, that was honoured with a series of lectures for the general public at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

- The 5th International Conference on Mathematical Neuroscience (ICMNS 2019) will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, 24-26 June 2019.

- The 12th European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ECMTB 2020) will take place in Heidelberg, Germany.
Austrian Mathematical Society
The Austrian Mathematical Society has awarded its 2018 Promotion Prize for Young Scientists, together with the Inzinger Medal, to Vera Fischer for outstanding achievements in mathematical logic.
Belgian Mathematical Society
The “Recent Breakthroughs in Mathematics” Symposium will take place on 5 December 2018, 2-6pm in Forum E, Université libre de Bruxelles, Campus de la Plaine. The event will consist of an afternoon's discussion by international and local experts on breakthroughs which have recently featured in the Abel prize and Fields medal: PDEs, Wavelet theory, Algebraic geometry and Number Theory. All talks will be accessible to broad mathematical audiences. Speakers : Stéphane Jaffard (UPEC, Paris), Jean Van Schaftingen (UC, Louvain), Matthew Morrow (IMJ-PRG, Paris) and Gautami Bhowmik (Lille I).

Royal Statistical Society of Belgium
The Belgian Statistical Society has been honored by “royal favour” by King Philip of Belgium and has become, on 22 September 2017, the Royal Statistical Society of Belgium. The Society was founded in 1937 in Brussels. Its first president, Armand Julin, was at the same time president of the International Statistical Institute. The current president is F.Thomas Bruss.
Cyprus Mathematical Society
- The Journal of the Cyprus Mathematical Society is “The Mediterranean Journal for Research in Mathematics Education”, and it invites submissions of research manuscripts. There is no submission fee. The Journal’s ISSN is “1450-1104 Cyprus Mathematical Society”, and it has been published for over 15 years. A new Editorial Board has been established with a new Open Paper Review Evaluation procedure, starting with the 2018 editions.

Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI)
1. SMAI 2018 awards :
- The 2018 Prix Louis Bachelier was awarded to Pauline Barrieu (London School of Economics and Political Science).
The Prix Louis Bachelier is a biennial prize in applied mathematics jointly awarded by the London Mathematical Society and the SMAI, in partnership with the Natixis Foundation for Quantitative Research. The award recognizes "exceptional contributions to mathematical modelling in finance, insurance, risk management and/or scientific computing applied to finance and insurance."
- The Prize Marc Yor 2018 has been awarded to Christophe Garban (Claude Bernard University and Institut Camille Jordan), for his work in probability and statistical physics.
The prize was instituted by the SMAI, the SMF (Société Mathématique de France) and is patronized by the French Académie des Sciences.
- The Prix Blaise Pascal 2018 was awarded to Julie Delon (Paris Descartes University) for her work on optimal transport in image analysis applications, and on new algorithms for image restoration based on stochastic models.
The Blaise Pascal Prize created by the group GAMNI of the SMAI is awarded by the French Académie des Sciences. It aims at promoting research in mathematics applied to engineering and industry.
2. On 13 December 2018, the Annual French Maths Career Fair (Forum Emploi Maths 2018) organized jointly with SFdS (French Statistics Society) and AMIES (Agence pour les Mathématiques en Interaction avec l'Entreprise et la Société) will be held at the Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie de la Villette in Paris.
3. The French Biennial Meeting on Applied and Industrial Mathematics jointly organized by SMAI and the Laboratoire Jean Leray (Nantes University, France) with the support of the Centre Henri Lebesgue will be held from 13th to 17th May 2019 in Guidel (Morbihan, France).
Italian Mathematical Union (UMI)
- The International Meeting “Alessio Figalli, Fields Medallist 2018”, will be held at the Centro di Ricerca Matematica Ennio De Giorgi, Pisa, January 14-17, 2019.

- Franco Montagna Prize. AILA (Italian Association of Logic and its Applications) and UMI call for nominations for a Ph.D. thesis on topics related to Mathematical Logic and its applications. The prize is awarded every two years with a prize of 2,000 Euros. Deadline: 31 December 2018.

- Franco Tricerri Prize. This prize is intended for candidates who earned their Ph.D. degree in Mathematics or Physics at a European university after February 28th, 2016, with a thesis concerning Differential Geometry. Deadline: February 28th, 2019.

Italian Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics (SIMAI)
In 2019 the SIMAI will be thirty years old. To mark the occasion, there will be a special event in Milan, with the participation of representatives of the major Societies for Applied Mathematics. The event, titled “30 Years of SIMAI: status and perspectives of applied and industrial mathematics in Italy and in Europe”, will take place at Politecnico di Milano, 1-2 July 2019. The workshop is a satellite event of ICIAM2019.

Norwegian Mathematical Society
- Viggo Brun Prize. In September 2018 the Norwegian Mathematical Society celebrated its 100th anniversary at a national meeting of mathematicians in Bergen. At the meeting, the society announced a new national award, the Viggo Brun Prize. The prize is named after the noted number theorist who became an honorary member of the Norwegian Mathematical Society in 1974. It is to be awarded biannually to a young mathematician, and comes with a cash reward of NOK 50.000. The 2018 laureate is Rune Haugseng, who receives the prize for his fundamental contributions to the theory of higher categories.

Polish Mathematical Society
- The "Joint meeting of the Italian Mathematical Union, the Italian Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the Polish Mathematical Society" took place 17-20 September in Wrocław, Poland. The meeting involved 683 participants from 32 countries. Twelve plenary speakers were invited. Maria J. Esteban (CNRS & Université Paris-Dauphine) was a guest plenary speaker. 553 talks were delivered in 43 thematic sessions.
During the opening ceremony, the Polish Mathematical Society’s Great Prizes for 2017 were presented. Krzysztof Bogdan (Wroclaw University of Science and Technology) was awarded the Stefan Banach Prize for his breakthrough results in the theory of stochastic processes and non-local operators.
Rafał Weron (Wrocław University of Science and Technology) was awarded the Hugo Steinhaus Prize for his lifetime achievements and deep contributions to modelling and forecasting electricity prices. Also two young mathematicians were honoured: Mateusz Wasilewski from Warsaw University received the Polish Mathematical Society’s Award for Young Scientists and Piotr Pokora (Institute of Mathematics Polish Academy of Sciences& Pedagogical University, Cracow) received the Kazimierz Kuratowski Prize (awarded jointly by Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Mathematical Society).
Royal Dutch Mathematical Society
- The 55th Nederlands Mathematisch Congres (Congress of the Royal Dutch Mathematical Society) will be held in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, on 23-24 April 2019.
Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME)
- The RSME’s biennial conference will be held in Santander (Spain), 4-8 February 2019. The program includes plenary lectures, 28 special sessions and several dissemination activities.

- Call for applications José Luis Rubio de Francia prize 2018.
The JLRF prize is awarded by the RSME, under the patronage of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Universidad de Zaragoza, and its aim is to recognize and encourage young mathematicians under the age of 32. Deadline for nominations is 31 December 2018.

Catalan Mathematical Society
- The EMS Executive Committee met in Barcelona, 9-11 November, 2018.
- The Catalan Society supported the III International Conference MATRIX, aimed at mathematics museums and outreach centers, which was held in Cornellà de Llobregat and Barcelona, Catalonia, 29-31 October 2018. The Matrix 2018 Conference was co-organised by the MMACA (Cornellà de Llobregat, Barcelona) and the MoMath (New York).

2019 ICIAM prizes
The following prizes will be presented during the Opening Ceremony of the ICIAM 2019 congress in Valencia (Spain) on 15-19 July 2019:
- 2019 ICIAM Collatz Prize for Sidharta Mishra (ETH, Zürich, Suisse), for his breakthrough contributions that skillfully combine modelling of real world problems and rigorous mathematical analysis with the development of efficient and accurate numerical schemes and high performance computing.
- 2019 ICIAM Lagrange Prize for George Papanicolau (Université de Stanford, USA), for his brilliant use of mathematics to solve important problems in science and engineering; in particular, problems involving inhomogeneity, wave propagation, random media, diffusion, scattering, focusing, imaging, and finance.
- 2019 ICIAM Maxwell Prize for Claude Bardos (Université René Diderot, Paris), for his seminal contributions to nonlinear partial differential equations, kinetic theory, and mathematical fluid mechanics.
- 2019 ICIAM Pioneer Prize for Yvon Maday (Sorbonne Université, Paris), in recognition of his leading role in the introduction of powerful methods for numerical simulation, such as spectral methods, reduced order modeling, domain decomposition, models and simulation in medical sciences, fluid-structure interaction, and ab-initio chemistry. Several of his works helped in the launching of start-ups and are intensively used in industry.
- 2019 ICIAM Su Buchin Prize for Giulia di Nunno (Université d'Oslo, Norvège), for her long-lasting record of actively and efficiently encouraging top-level mathematical research and education in developing African countries.

Meetings Committee
In October 2018, the EMS Meetings Committee had to evaluate the applications for: EMS Summer Schools, EMS Lecturer, EMS Distinguished Speaker, EMS Joint Mathematical Weekend, Special Activities, Activities endorsed by the EMS.
This year there were no applications for EMS Lecturer, EMS Joint Mathematical Weekend, or Activities endorsed by the EMS. The number of applications for EMS Distinguished Speaker and Special Activities were three and four respectively (in line with previous years). In contrast, the number of applications for EMS Summer Schools (20) substantially increased, requiring a serious amount of work by the Committee in a short time. The meetings committee made its recommendations to the Executive Committee, and the list of EMS supported events for 2019 will appear in due course on the webpage at

THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF MATHEMATICS: NEWS, LOGO AND WEBSITE
- News: The proposal that UNESCO proclaim March 14th (“Pi Day”) as the International Day of Mathematics (IDM) has been adopted by the Executive Board of UNESCO at its October meeting. It had been proposed jointly by the Permanent Delegations at UNESCO of Albania, Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Egypt, France, Ghana, Grenada, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ivory Coast, Jamaica, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay, Philippines, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Solomon Islands, Syria, Turkey, Saint-Lucia, Spain, Uruguay, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The proposal will now be on the agenda of the 40th General Conference of UNESCO in Autumn 2019.
- Competition for the logo of the IDM: the deadline for submitting a proposal for a logo for the IDM is December 31 2018.
- Call for bids for hosting the IDM website: The IMU is inviting its Adhering Organizations to submit bids for hosting the IDM website, which will have the url www.idm314.org. The deadline for this call is January 10 2019.
7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), 22-27 September 2019
Calling Outstanding Young Researchers - Apply now for the 7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum!
The Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation encourages young researchers in computer science and mathematics from all over the world to apply for one of the 200 coveted spots. The HLF offers all accepted young researchers the great opportunity to personally interact with the laureates of the most prestigious prizes in the fields of mathematics and computer science. During the last week in September, the recipients of the Abel Prize, the ACM A.M. Turing Award, the ACM Prize in Computing, the Fields Medal, and the Nevanlinna Prize engage in a cross-generational scientific dialogue with young researchers in Heidelberg, Germany.
