Specialises in the history of mediaeval settlements, particularly the transformation of aspects of the settlement structure from the 8th-15th centuries, the formation and origins of urban communities, the peak of colonisation during the 13th century, mediaeval fortifications and the mining of precious metals.
After studying Archaeology at the University of Brno he worked as a specialist – historian in the Museum of the Vyškovsko Region and then as an archaeologist in what was then the Brno-venkov District Museum in Ivančice and in Předklášteř. Since 1994 he has worked for the Institute of Archaeology in Brno as a researcher, and is now also the science secretary and head of the Monument Conservation Department.
