The popular image of Prague is that the city is rich and its citizens earn high salaries and have high living standard. The chapter asks two questions: Do higher average salaries of Prague citizens mean higher purchasing power? Are all citizens of Prague better-off than people living outside Prague? Examination of the data about both salaries and prices in Prague and in other Czech regions proves that the advantage of higher salaries in Prague is substantially devaluated high costs of housing and many services. The difference in purchasing power in and outside Prague is not as high as it seems from comparisons of salary levels. Differences in standard of living exist among different socio-economic groups within Prague itself. While managers and highly skilled experts earn much more in Prague than anywhere in the country, incomes of unskilled manual workers, low-skilled service workers or pensioners are only slightly higher in Prague, but expenditures in Prague are much.
