The department pursues research in the field of folk culture with the main focus on Moravia and Silesia and adjacent regions. Research projects deal with contemporary culture and everyday life in urban and rural context, ethnic minorities, interethnic relations, and Czech groups abroad. Contemporary ethnographic research goes simultaneously with processing of archival funds. Members of the staff are experts in the fields of musical, literary and children’s folklore, rituals, customs, social life and the history of the discipline.

The archival funds contain, among other materials, more than 73 000 handwritten records of folk songs spanning last 150 years, which constitutes the most valuable folk song archive in Czech Republic.
