Group of Female Ambassadors Visits the Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences

On 18 January 2017 the Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences, had the honour to welcome to its premises a group of female ambassadors led by Her Excellency Michèle Pranchère-Tomassini, Ambassador of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to the Czech Republic, Estonia, and the Ukraine. The following female ambassadors and chargées d’affaires to the Czech Republic also took part in the visit: Ms. Albertine M. Kabambi, chargée d’affaires of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Her Excellency Ms. Ines Troha, Ambassador of Croatia, Ms. Rola Hamdan, chargée d’affaires of Lebanon, Her Excellency Ms. Souriya Otmani, Ambassador of Morocco, Her Excellency Ms. Liliana De Olarte de Torres-Muga, Ambassador of Peru, Her Excellency Ms. Manuela Franco, Ambassador of Portugal, Her Excellency Ms. Vera Mavrić, Ambassador of Serbia, Her Excellency Ms. Franki Verwey, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa, and Her Excellency Ms. Anna Viktoria Li, Ambassador of Sweden. Also invited was Prof. RNDr. Eva Zažímalová, CSc., who was elected President of the Czech Academy of Sciences for the period 2017–2021 at the Academy’s Assembly in December 2016. During the group’s two-hour morning visit the research staff of the Institute presented to their guests some of the projects and themes of the various departments and the background resources for art-historical research: the Photo Archive and Photographic Studio, and the Department of Documentation with its collection of prints and photographs and its collection of restoration work. Our academic workplace can also take pride in the fact that among the specialists in mediaeval art who work here is PhDr. Klára Benešovská, CSc., who in 2015 was awarded the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in recognition in particular of her many years of research relating to John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia

A conference "Orient oder Rom? Prehistory, History and Reception of a Historiographical Myth (1880-1930)" takes place 6th-8th February 2017 in Brno. It opens on Monday February at 20.30 in the Museum of Applied Arts with a lecture given by Robin Cormack (University of London): "St Sophia as Feuertempel: Inspiration or Madness?". Not a Single Snake in Sight

The exhibition Not a Single Snake in Sight has opened in the Regional Gallery Liberec. The project is an outcome of the interdisciplinary programme Strategie AV21 and presents the works of Josef Čapek, František Hrubín, Jan Skácel, and Miloslav Kabeláč centered around the theme of the world of children. The exhibition prepared by Pavla Machalíková and Tomáš Winter will last till the end of April 2017.

From Hus to Luther

The Brepols Publishers are preparing a book with the title "From Hus to The Luther. Visual Culture in the Bohemian Reformation (1380–1620)". The book is closely connected to the research project the outcome of which was the exhibition "The Art of the Bohemian Reformation(1380–1620)", organised in 2009–2010 by the Prague Castle Administration in the cooperation with the IAH CAS. Simultaneously, a book has been published with the same title. It comprises essays dealing with the art production associated with the Protestant faith from the Hussite's period until the battle at Bílá hora, when the Catholics defeated the Protestants. The book is co-edited by Kateřina Horníčková and our colleague Michal Šroněk from the Department of Early Modern Art.

The Landscape and Countryside in Baroque

The Institute of Art History, Omnium, a civil society organisation and the city Horní Jiřetín in cooperation with Czech universities invite you to the international conference on the relationship of landscape and countryside in 17th and 18th centuries. The conference focuses on the various aspects how the landscape was shaped and perceived, on the art and architecture in countryside in the early modern times.
