Atmospheric Boundary Layer: main characteristics and methods
of research in the context of continuum mechanics
prof. Zbyněk Jaňour
Institute of Thermomechanics of the CAS, v. v. i.
Lecture outline:
The bulk of the fluid on the Earth's surface can be found in the atmosphere and the oceans. Geophysical Fluid mechanics investigate it. The flow inside the area near the Earth's surface is called Atmospheric Boundary Layer in a certain analogy with the classical theory of fluid mechanics. Its properties, methods of research, taking into account their shortcomings; will be discussed in the following paragraphs.
- Introduction: the introduction of the concept of and the reasons for its monitoring;
- The basic characteristics (Equations of motion in continuum mechanics approximation, Flow in a rotating coordinate system, The temperature stratification, Turbulence and determinism)
- Modelling (experimental methods, numerical methods)
- Tasks solved in the Laboratory of Environmental Aerodynamics;
- New problems to solve: Verification and validation of mathematical models, Many scales problem;
- Conclusion: applications
