The first impurity seeding experiments on te COMPASS tokamak

See our new video which shows the effect of nitrogen impurity seeding in the COMPASS tokamak.

Although one wants to have the plasma as clean as possible to achieve high fusion performance, impurities such as nitrogen or noble gases are required to protect the plasma facing components from extreme heat loads coming from the hot plasma. These impurities allow to transform kinetic energy carried by plasma particles into visible and UV light radiation, which helps to distribute the heat fluxes uniformly on the first wall of the tokamak. Nitrogen injection starts at time mark 1100 ms.
