Chemical and biochemical sensors based on functionalized micro- and nanostructured optical waveguides

Sponsor: Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic

Principal investigator: Jiří Kaňka, Ph.D.

The project is carried out in  collaboration with the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (Prof. Henry Du), Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, N.J.), on the research of chemical and biochemical sensors based on specialty, namely photonic crystal fibers. The fibers are functionalized with a long-period grating inscription, special coatings and deposition of metallic plasmonic nanoparticles. The projects benefits from the synergistic effect of a combination of UFE’s expertise in the numerical analysis and optimal design of the specialty fibers and Stevens’s  outstanding achievements in micro- and nano-technologies employed for the functionalization of the sensor fibers.
