Specilalization:

The main interest of our research is evolution of sex-determining mechanisms. Particular mode of sex determination is important not only at the individual organismal level (i.e. establishment of the sex during ontogeny), but it can also influence population sex ratio and therefore total evolvability and susceptibility to extinction of the lineage in question. We are predominantly focused on reptiles (Sauropsida) as a model group for our research because in general we can find large variability in sex-determining mechanisms in this group. In some lineages sex is determined by sex chromosomes (XX/XY or ZZ/ZW) and in others by environmental factors (such as temperature). We study evolution of sex determining mechanisms and also evolution of genome organisation across lineages of reptiles and for larger comparison also in other vertebrates using various technics of classical and molecular cytogenetics including fluorescent in situ hybridization, laser microdissection or chromosome sorting on flow cytometer.
