Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease, often accompanied by impaired rhythms of sleep and wakefulness. In our pilot study, we examined the sleep parameters (diaries and actigraphy), circadian melatonin levels and the expression of clock genes Per1 and Bmal1 in 13 patients with mild AD in their home environment; 13 healthy patient's spouses served as controls. Our results suggest only moderate differences in functional state of the circadian system of AD patients, mainly in the form of a greater number of naps and abnormal melatonin profiles.
