Library

The library of the Institute of Art History, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (founded in 1953), is a specialised library concentrating on the history, theory, and methodology of visual art and related fields (architecture, aesthetics, history, auxiliary historical disciplines, etc.). Its collections include the library of the N.P. Kondakov Archaeological Institute, and part of the library of Zdeněk Wirth and Josef Cibulka. The library currently has over 79 000 volumes (books and exhibition catalogues) and subscribes to 220 periodicals, 91 of them from other countries. The library also includes the bibliography workplace.

Foreign literature is well represented in the library's collection, and is acquired by purchase, exchanges with 116 specialist institutions, and donations. A particularly important partner and donator is the International Foundation for Art Research (New York), from which the library acquired 76 volumes of the worldwide inventory of print collections The Illustrated Bartsch. Thanks to the support of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation further volumes are received as they are published, now through the Institute for Art Research and Documentation based in Norwalk (in 2009 we already had 105 volumes).

In 1991-1994 the library purchased a considerable quantity of foreign publications thanks to generous support provided under the Getty Grant Program.
