Dermatophytoses are common inflammatory cutaneous diseases of humans and other vertebrates caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. These pathogens often specialize in a particular group of animals including humans. Specialized species form inconspicuous, long-standing infections among their major hosts (e.g. guinea pigs, cats or rabbits), but they form highly inflammatory infections among accidental hosts (e.g. humans).
