The conference will be held at the Chateau Liblice (near Prague) on 29–30 June, 2017
Convenors: Jonathan Kwan (University of Nottingham) and Luboš Velek (Masaryk Institute and Archive of The Czech Academy of Sciences)
The 1867 Compromise created Austria-Hungary and set the framework for politics until the end of the Habsburg Monarchy. Its genesis and the evolving political practices were crucial in forming the region’s democratic political culture. This conference has two aims: (1) to facilitate an exchange of ideas and research about specific aspects of the political system and (2) to postulate larger conceptual frameworks for understanding long-term political developments.
The organizers would welcome papers on any aspect of the 1867 Compromise, broadly defined. Possible themes include:
- Political parties (including political associations and clubs)
- Individuals in politics
- The press
- The Monarch and his government (including informal advisors)
- Elections
- Parliamentary culture
- Local and/or regional case studies
The organizers especially encourage proposals from recent PhDs and post-doctoral scholars as well as those in the final stages of their dissertations.
Conference languages will be English and German. A very small number of travel grants are available for early career researchers. The organizers will cover accommodation and catering costs.
