The three-dimensional holographic universe: gravity, higher spins and strings

I will give a non-technical overview of research done in our group on applying holographic ideas to three dimensional theories. Starting with the example of pure Einstein gravity, I will go on to describe progress in understanding higher spin theories and, finally, recent results on reformulating string theory as a higher spin theory.
