Anotace:
As a nodal point on the Danube, the location of Regensburg was naturally affected by the river. This advantageous topographic position was already used in 179 AD for the construction of the Roman military camp. As an early bishop´s seat and residence of the Dukes of Bavaria the western part of Regensburg underwent a substantial urban development already in the 10th century. By building of the city wall at the bank of the Danube also the eastern part was included into the town in the early 14th century. In 2015 the excavations at Donaumarkt brought to light new findings about the urbanisation process in the eastern part of the city.

During the Early and High Middle Ages this area served as a suburban craft and trade district as the topography of the river bank allowed for comfortable landing and transport of the goods by ships. However, numerous settlement layers revealed also sediments evidencing high impact of fluvial activity and, in fact, the constant danger of flooding. These processes and urban reactions to them are the focal points of the ongoing research of the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena.
