HPC linux cluster system administrator

The Central European Institute of Cosmology and Fundamental Physics (CEICO), at the Institute of Physics of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague, welcomes applications for an HPC Linux cluster system administrator for a new HPC system that will be installed in Autumn 2017.

You will join a growing international team of research scientists. You will be expected to work independently in troubleshooting and problem solving and also work collaboratively with the research team and with administrators of other HPC systems at the Institute of Physics.

You will be responsible for

  • Managing a High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster and associated support infrastructure including installation, configuration and support of open source and commercial software.
  • Day-to-day system administration and monitoring.
  • Developing and implementing improvements in the cluster operation procedures and performance tuning.
  • Providing user support.
  • Coordinating with vendors for resolving hardware and software problems.
  • Jointly writing the HPC cluster operations documentation with senior members of the team.
  • Installing, testing and configuring software tools, libraries and compilers as required by the research team.

Required skills include

  • Demonstrated ability in Linux system management for the cluster environment (Scientific Linux and CentOS preferred). At least 1 year experience in a similar position.
  • Demonstrated interest and skills in coding with scripting languages (Bash, python).
  • Experience in the installation and support of parallel computing environments (e.g. OpenMPI, MVAPICH etc).
  • Experience with high-performance interconnects (RDMA, high-speed Ethernet).
  • Experience in the installation, configuration and support of job schedulers (Torque, SLURM, etc).
  • Ability to communicate in English in oral and written form at the B2 level (minimum)
  • Ability to work alone and with a team.

Expert knowledge of C, parallel code optimization, experience with parallel file systems and Git, are considered an advantage.

CEICO is a new research centre, established with funds from the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Czech Science Foundation, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and the European Commission. The team’s areas of research are: cosmology, gravity, string field theory, and instrumentation for cosmological observations.
