Postdoctoral Position at the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic

Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for post-doctoral positions in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

We are Public Research Institution and the largest professional astronomical organization in the Czech Republic, located at Ondrejov observatory and in Prague. Successful applicants will collaborate with researchers in our scientific departments (theory, observation, and data analysis are all welcome). Recently the Institute has been involved in space programs of ESA and ground-based projects within ESO, including the European ALMA. Experience in one of the subjects studied at the Institute is valued but independent new projects will be also considered.

The appointment is initially for one year; an extension for another year is expected upon satisfactory scientific performance. A necessary condition is to satisfy legal requirements for the employment in Czech Republic (EU member state). Salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes health insurance. There is a possibility of institute accommodation in Ondrejov; in Prague private accommodation has to be arranged.

A funded Ph.D. position in Solar Physics in Ondřejov

Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for a doctoral (Ph.D.) position in the group of Structure and Dynamics of Solar Atmosphere in Ondřejov Observatory.

The position will be fully funded from the project "Evolution of sunspots and active regions" supported by the Czech Science Foundation. The successful applicant will join the group of Structure and Dynamics of Solar Atmosphere, which resides in Ondřejov (about 30 km from Prague), and will work together with Michal Švanda, Jan Jurčák, and Michal Sobotka. It is expected that the applicant enrolls an accredited Ph.D. programme in Physics at Charles University in Prague  or Masaryk University in Brno. The specialization of the Ph.D. study is negotiable, however it has to be closely related to the above mentioned project. The possible topics include the semi-empirical description of evolution of solar active regions from state-of-the-art data and methods, and coupling between magnetic and velocity fields. It is expected that the applicant will participate in securing the ground-based observations with GREGOR solar telescope.

The position is supported by a salary, which is based on the domestic levels (about CZK 26,000 brutto) and includes a health insurance. The position is also connected with a decent travel budget. The funding is secured until the end of 2020. Additional funding might be available at the university in a form of a scholarship. A necessary condition for the appointment is to satisfy the legal requirements for being employed in the Czech Republic. The applicant must hold an advanced level (MSc. equivalent) university degree in astronomy or physics or be expected to obtain one before the beginning of the contract. The Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invites applications for a post-doctoral position in the Relativistic Astrophysics Group at the Prague section of the Institute. The appointment is initially for one year; an extension until the end of 2019 is expected upon satisfactory scientific performance and availability of funds. The position will be funded through the project “Non-linear Phenomena in a Multi-channel Astronomy of Black Holes”, which is supported by the Czech Science Foundation. The salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes health insurance. Commencement is expected on the 1st of August 2018.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate research experience at least in one of the following topics: orbital dynamics in GR (Mathisson-Papapetrou equations, effective one-body approximation, self-force), gravitational waves (astrophysically relevant sources, synergy with electromagnetic signatures), black-hole accretion discs (GRMHD modeling, exact solutions), and/or particle acceleration in magnetic fields near black holes (effects of strong gravity). A successful applicant will join Georgios Loukes-Gerakopoulos, Petra Sukova, and Ondrej Kopacek in their research team, supported by the Czech Science Foundation.
