2016-03-30 RECRUITMENT- NEW PhD position in a Marie-Curie ITN project (application-dead line - March 30, 2016)

J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry of the ASCR, v.v.i., offers:
One new PhD position in a Marie-Curie ITN project -

Early Stage Researcher in Ion Chemistry and Physics for Chemical Reaction Mass Spectrometry (Horizon 2020 IMPACT ITN).

Description
Applications are invited for a PhD position to work as an Early Stage Researcher in a Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN).

Project IMPACT (Ion Molecule Processes for Analytical Chemistry Technologies) is a multidisciplinary analytical science Innovative Training Network (ITN) involving three interlinking themes: fundamental research, instrumental development and applications in the areas of environmental sciences, biosciences and homeland security.

The selected candidate will be based at the J. Heyrovský Institute of Physical Chemistry of the ASCR, v. v. i., working under the supervision of Prof. Patrik Španěl. The researcher is expected to work on the development of new methods of quantitative trace gas analysis related to selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry, SIFT-MS with a particular focus on studies of ion physics and chemistry related to advanced evaluation of gas phase ion molecule reaction product ion branching ratios in the presence of water vapour. The post is available for 3 years and the salary will be commensurate with a H2020-MSCA-ITN-2015 Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) position. The appointed candidate will be expected to attend a weeklong training meeting in September 2016 in the UK and to work for several months during the 3 years appointment at other workplaces involved in this EU project. The candidate will be expected to defend a PhD degree at the end of the appointment.

Eligibility
The position is open to candidates from any country, as long as they fulfil the following requirements:
- Less than 4 years full-time research experience and must not hold a PhD.
- Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the Czech Republic for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of appointment.

Required skills
- Candidates must have completed their Master studies in physics or physical chemistry at the time of the appointment
- Good level of English (written and spoken) corresponding to ability to prepare research articles for publication and to write a PhD thesis.
- Ability to learn the Czech language during the three years at a level required to defend a PhD thesis.
- Knowledge of gas phase physics, basic thermodynamics and basic chemistry.
- Knowledge of vacuum physics and technology.
- Knowledge of mathematics needed for ion-chemical kinetics analyses and modelling (differential equations, numerical methods, regression statistics)
- Knowledge of analogue, digital and data acquisition electronics.
- Knowledge of software and firmware development languages (C, C++, C#)

Desired experience
- Experience in mass spectrometry or gaseous discharges.
- Experience in the practical use of the above-mentioned mathematics, electronics and software languages.
- Experience in design of scientific instruments including related electronics and software.

The expected starting date - September 1st 2016

Application Procedure

The applicant must send the following documents to
Prof. Patrik Španěl (patrik.spanelatjh-inst.cas.cz)
by March 30th, 2016:
