EDITORIAL
Dear members of the EMS,
This is a short summary of my vision for the EMS in the next four years.
Although the EMS is a well-functioning society, there is always room for improvement and there are major challenges on the horizon. We have to overcome the large imbalance of mathematical research and education in Europe. We should communicate better between the different fields of mathematics and with other sciences and we should strongly work together in lobbying for the advancement of mathematics in Europe. The different areas of mathematics should treat each other with higher respect than often in the past and we should get more active in the advancement of young mathematicians and to increase the visibility of mathematics in society and our young colleagues, in particular.
Mathematical publications are an important factor of our activities. In view of the fact that publishing becomes more and more electronic, the current publishing models will have to be rethought, and this will be a major activity for the EMS in the coming years. This also concerns the current open access strategies of the EU and the member states that will have a major effect on the way mathematical publishing in the future will look.
Finally, many of us are complaining about the fact that mathematics education is getting worse in Europe. The whole community has to make major efforts to avoid further degradation of the standards and to improve math education as a whole but also for highly talented young people.
I am looking forward to four years of working together with you for the well-being of mathematics in Europe.

The 8th European Congress of Mathematics (July 5 –11, 2020, Portorož, Slovenia, www.8ecm.si)
The call for organizing a minisymposium (MS) for 8ECM is open until 1 December 2019. An MS consists of one 40 min. talk, five 30 min. talks and any number of short 20 min. talks and posters. MS proposals are to be submitted by filling out an on-line form at https://www.8ecm.si/calls/call-for-minisymposia.
The Local Scientific Committee will examine and evaluate all proposals and deliver its decision within a month of submission. You can see the list of approved MS at https://www.8ecm.si/events/minisymposia

Third Caucasian Mathematics Conference (CMC-III)
CMC-III will be held in Rostov-on-Don (Russia), 26-29 August 2019, under the auspices of the EMS, on the base of Southern Federal University and with the cooperation of the Armenian, Azerbaijan, Georgian, Iranian, Moscow and Turkish Mathematical Societies.

- The next math-industries fair will be organised on 15 October 2019 at the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie de Paris La Villette (France).
- Jean-François Le Gall (Université Paris-Sud) and Gregory Lawler (Chicago University) are the laureates of the Wolf Prize 2019.

Irish Mathematical Society
The Committee of the Irish Mathematical Society, at its meeting in December 2018, decided to discontinue the printing of hardcopies of its twice-yearly Bulletin and instead to focus solely on its electronic publication. The Bulletin of the Irish Mathematical Society will continue to be available for all to download free of charge from the Society’s website: at http://www.irishmathsoc.org.
All past issues of the Bulletin, dating back to 1978 (the title 'Newsletter' was used during the period 1978-1985) are also currently available for free download.
Italian Mathematical Union (UMI)
The UMI announces the following Prizes:
- Renato Caccioppoli Prize 2018 is awarded to Italian mathematicians who are not older than 38 by 31 December 2018. Deadline for nominations: 28 February 2019.

Italian Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics (SIMAI)
"30 Years of SIMAI: status and perspectives of applied and industrial mathematics in Italy and in Europe"
In 2019, SIMAI becomes thirty years old. To mark the occasion we will hold a special event in Milan (Italy), with representatives of the major Societies for Applied Mathematics. The event will take place at Politecnico di Milano, 1-2 July 2019. This workshop is a satellite event of ICIAM2019.

Kosovar Mathematical Society
Dr.Sc.Armend Shabani, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics (Faculty of Mathematical and Natural Science, Pristina) has been elected as the new President of the Kosovar Mathematical Society.
London Mathematical Society
- Professor Sir Michael Atiyah, LMS President 1974-76, died on 11 January aged 89. See his obituary here: http://tinyurl.com/yxkrp38e

- The LMS has announced Professor Jonathan Keating FRS, as President-Designate. He will take over from the current President, Professor Caroline Series FRS, in November 2019.
- The Hirst Lecture and Society Meeting will take place on 21 March. Jeremy Gray (Open University and Warwick) will give the Hirst Lecture on Jesse Douglas, Minimal Surfaces, and the first Fields Medal.

- The Mary Cartwright Lecture and Society Meeting will take place on 5 April at ICMS, Edinburgh. Beatrice Pelloni (Heriot-Watt) will give the Mary Cartwright Lecture on Nonlinear transforms in the study of fluid dynamics.

Polish Mathematical Society
In 2019 the Polish Mathematical Society celebrates its Centenary.
The Senate of the Republic of Poland (the Upper House of the Polish Parliament) has declared 2019 to be The Year Of Mathematics.
In April 2019 the Polish Mathematical Society will hold in the Senate a conference titled "Mathematics - Challenges of the Future in Centenary of the Polish Mathematical Society".
In May 2019 (also in the Senate) there will be an exposition of the history of the Polish School of Mathematics and the Polish Mathematical Society.
At the beginning of September 2019 in Kraków there will be an Anniversary Meeting in Honour of Centenary of the Polish Mathematical Society.
Mathematical Institute of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MISANU)
May Month of Mathematics (M³)
During May 2019, MISANU in cooperation with the Center for Science Promotion of the Republic of Serbia will organize the 8th edition of M³. Across Serbia, a range of activities will be held to celebrate mathematics and raise awareness of its significance in modern society, including exhibitions, popular lectures, scientific cafes, publications, programs for kids, and media. The central theme will be "Mathematics of the World", through applications of mathematics to the study of planet Earth, from geography and climatology to astronomy and celestial mechanics.
Special activities will celebrate the 140th anniversary of the birth of the scientist Milutin Milanković, one of the most prominent Serbian mathematicians, civil engineers and popular science writers, who gave us two fundamental contributions to climate science.

Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SeMA)
The International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics 2019 (ICIAM 2019) will be held at the Universitat de València, 15-19 July 2019, with SeMA in charge of the local organization. Several satellite meetings will also be held.

Royal Spanish Mathematical Society (RSME)
- The call for nominations for the Vicent Caselles RSME-BBVA 2019 Research Awards is open until 28 February 2019. The RSME together with BBVA Foundation will award six prizes to researchers in mathematics under the age of 31.

- The Biannual Congress of the Spanish Mathematical Society was held 4-8 February 2019 at the Universidad de Cantabria, Santander. Over 400 researchers from Europe and America participated.

- The second meeting of mathematical societies from Brazil (SBM and SBMAC) and Spain (RSME and SEMA) took place at the University of Cádiz, 11-14 December 2018. This was a satellite conference of ICIAM, with the goal of strengthening collaborations between researchers and institutions of both countries. Over 300 people attended.

Swiss Mathematical Society (SMS)
The SMS Spring Meeting and General Assembly 2019 will take place within the "SMS Geometry and Groups Days", 12-14 June 2019 at University of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, featuring a public lecture by Alan Reid (Rice University, USA).

Applied Mathematics Committee

Education Committee
Transition from school to university-level mathematics (the secondary-tertiary transition, STT) is a complicated and multi-faceted process. STT has merited significant attention in mathematics education research and practice. At its 2018 meeting in Cyprus, the Education Committee recognized that our knowledge of successful ways of dealing with STT is insufficient, and that we require a large-scope engagement with all parties, including lecturers, school teachers, education researchers, policymakers, and students. As part of this effort, the Committee is conducting a survey among mathematicians. Its goal is to collect and report to the mathematics community information needed to devise national and international actions for improving the state of the art with respect to STT.

GAMM (International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics)
- The 90th annual meeting of GAMM was held in Vienna, 18-22 February 2019. It welcomed over 1200 participants.
- GAMM awarded the 2019 Richard-von-Mises Prize to Dr. Dietmar Gallistl (University of Twente) and Dr.-Ing. Philipp Junker (Ruhr-Universität Bochum). Since 1989, the Richard-von-Mises Prize has been awarded every year by GAMM to one or two scientists under 36 years for exceptional scientific achievements in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.
- GAMM has selected 10 young researchers as new GAMM-juniors: Peter Gangl (Technische Universität Graz), Carmen Gräßle (Universität Hamburg), Arne Claus Hansen-Dörr (Technische Universität Dresden), Dustin Roman Jantos (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), Lena Lambers (Universität Stuttgart), Stephan Lange (Universität Kassel), Kerstin Lux (Universität Mannheim), Stefan Metzger (Friedrich Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), Lisa Scheunemann (Universität Duisburg-Essen), Ailyn Stötzner (Technische Universität Chemnitz).

DIDEROT MATHEMATICAL FORUM
The 8th Diderot Mathematical Forum "Mathematics and Architecture" will be held on 8th June 2019 in Helsinki (Finland), Porto (Portugal), and Prague (Czech Republic)
The cycle of conferences "Diderot Mathematical Forum" was introduced by the EMS in 1996. Each conference takes place simultaneously in three European cities, exchanging information by videoconferences. It addresses a specific topic, and has both a research and a public component. Call for Nominations for the Ostrowski Prize, 2019
The aim of the Ostrowski Foundation is to promote the mathematical sciences. Every second year it provides a prize for recent outstanding achievements in pure mathematics and in the foundations of numerical mathematics.

7th Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF), 22-27 September 2019
Travel Grants for Journalists
The HLF Foundation (HLFF) aspires to extend the HLF’s reach and to encourage the interaction between science, media, and the public. For this purpose, the HLFF awards travel grants for talented journalists from all over the world to report on this gathering of brilliant scientists, and the ideas from the worlds of computer science and mathematics. The grants cover travel costs as well as board and accommodation during a stay in Heidelberg from 21-28 September 2019. Application is possible until 20 May 2019.
