The Brno Institute of Archaeology archive has been in operation from the time that the Brno branch of the State Archaeological Institute was founded in 1942. It is an archive which specialises in the field, and collates information gathered through archaeological research in Moravia and Silesia, but it is not an archive in the sense of the Act on Archives.
Within the department information is centralised, giving rise to an extensive information base, a kind of information treasure house for Moravia-Silesian archaeology. The archive provides a research base especially for the scientific community and for students of the historical sciences.
At present the systematic creation of a digital archive is taking place at the facility, through the scanning of older analogue materials and the filing of new primarily digital documents. Because of the growing volume of digital data and increasing demands on their administration and management we have decided to develop a new central database system. We see the archiving of our information heritage as a common interest, a joint matter for the whole archaeological community. We have therefore set as one of the goals to be achieved the option for active completion of the archive and the maintenance of transparent personnel accounts on the part of authorised archaeological institutions.
The new system, whose development and testing are in their final phase, has been named Internet Database of Field Archaeological Research in Moravia and Silesia.It is based on a client-server system with a web and desktop client (distributed under the designation Megalith), which ensures comfortable work with a large quantity of data both off- and on-line The database permits the linking of all available documentation for a particular piece of archaeological research, its filing in a central data warehouse, a description of metadata for individual documents, gives access to on-line information, where it will be possible to browse using full-text and multi-criteria search by permission, and guarantees safe document-sharing.
Supplementary functions to make timetables easier to understand are automatic warnings for upcoming time limits for handing in documentation and depiction of an interactive calendar of current, terminated and future (announced) archaeological research. Thanks to an internal communication system there will be more rapid, and simplified, communication between users and the operating staff.
In summary, a benefit of the new system from the user's point of view will be simplification of office work for those who are involved in the active input of data to the archive, and for others the provision of convenient access to information. At the same time these records will also serve the needs of monument care, which will use it to publicise current sites under threat, at which rescue research ought to be undertaken. Archaeological research is therefore being archived in all phases of its "life": from its registration by an authorised institution up to the final filing of all documentation in the digital archive.
The chosen solution for the whole system was influenced by the possibility of future operation of a unified national database for archaeological research. We have therefore developed the core of the system based on the Internet Records of Field Archaeological Research archive of the Czech Academy of Sciences Prague Institute of Archaeology and have respected its existing index and form structure.
We have planned implementation of the new system for 2011. We trust that it will not only increase awareness and mutual visibility in the work of the archaeological community, but will also deepen interest in this issue and contribute to greater appreciation of the significance of our information heritage for society. Information telling us about the rich prehistory and history of our country is an integral part of our cultural heritage and plays its part in the shaping and perception of national identity. Its significance also serves our understanding of history and culture in the context of the whole of Europe.
Due to the growing volume of digital data and the increasing amount of administration and management required, we have decided to create a new central records system. We also regard the archiving of our information heritage as a matter of common interest, the common interest of the archaeological community as a whole. We have therefore designed this tool for the administration of the digital archive above and beyond the framework of a standard database, resulting in the creation of a comprehensive information system. The staff of authorised archaeological organisations also have the chance to make active contributions to the archive and to manage synoptic personal accounts, including the actual archival database.
The system is currently in a phase of implementation and optimization. If you obtained access rights, you can start to hand information through a new information system.

We are currently in the process of switching to a new information system (see the Megalit Project). For now, however, it is still possible to submit reports and documentation concerning archaeological research projects through the classic channels (OZAA, ZAA, NZ). Of course, we recommend that you also register with the information system (a detailed guide can be found HERE) and familiarise yourself with its working environment.
Instructions for submitting classic OZAA, ZAA and NZ:
An organisation (operating in Moravia and Silesia) authorised to carry out archaeological research is obliged (under Section 21 Paragraph 4 of Law No. 20/1987 Coll. on State Heritage Preservation, Permit of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and pursuant to the Agreement with the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) to do the following:
1. Inform ARÚB of the start of archaeological research no later than 10 days prior to its commencement (OZAA form); please send by email: suchankova@arub.cz
2. Upon completion of each piece of archaeological research, provide ARÚB with the results of such research, at least once per calendar year (ZAA form); please send by email to:suchankova@arub.cz
3. Within three years of the completion of the archaeological research, submit a find report (see Instructions for Compiling Find Reports), in printed form and in its digital equivalent (*.pdf).
Caution: If archaeological research is performed in a territory declared a cultural monument (KP), a national cultural monument (NKP), a monument conservation area (MPR, VPR) or a monument conservation zone (PZ), the above documents must also be sent to the National Heritage Institute, Central Department in Brno (contact Mgr. D. Vorlíčková,
vorlickova@up.npu.cz). This obligation continues to apply when an archive information system is used.

The Internet Encyclopaedia of the History of Brno is a cultural information portal which for many years now has been administered by an extensive team of specialised employees from scientific, research, cultural and educational institutions in Brno. Through interconnected encyclopaedic entries it provides internet users with information on various aspects of the history of Brno.
Since 2010 the archive and library of the ARÚ Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Brno – together with other archaeological institutions, primarily based in Brno - have been part of the project under the Operational Programme Education for Competitiveness, in the Partnership and Network axis, with the aim of gradually creating a database mapping the archaeological situation in Brno and Jihlava. Our workplace has played an active part in the development of the Encyclopaedia environment and has also provided specialised information for the database. The archive uses its funds to expand the Archaeology section, while the library supplies quotations from specialised archaeological publications for the Literature section.
