His research was focused on the substantiality of memory of laboratory animals and humans. He found how the spreading depression wave temporarily worsens the memory in the cortex. He alwo found how are the  information stored in other parts of the brain (hippocampus et al.). Bureš lecture series that is organized from 2013 is named after him.
