Knihy a dějiny – Edition 1-2, Volume 23, 2016 has just been published

The current edition of Books and History contains source studies devoted to Bohemian and Moravian printers. Jana Tvrzníková considers illustrational material produced by Michael Peterle, a printer from Prague in the 16th century, while Miroslav Myšák has analysed and edited the income ledger of the printer Anna Alžběta Ettelová from Olomouc in the middle of the 17th century. Two more papers are devoted to the frontispieces that were placed in printed works for promotional and marketing purposes to encourage readers to make purchases (Hana Beránková, The Typology of Baroque Frontispieces in Printed Works from Bohemia, and Klára Andresová, Frontispieces and Engraved Title Pages of Military Handbooks). The paper written by Veronika Sladká devoted primarily to the medieval history of the library at St. Thomas’ Augustinian Monastery in Prague, a continuation of which is to be found in the next edition, provides a summary of the given topic. In this edition, you can find a study by Hana Ferencová on the image of the Czech Lands formed in the 17th century by English travellers and an article on floods in the Czech Lands from the 16th to 18th centuries (Jan Munzar – Stanislav Ondráček – Lubor Kysučan). David Mach contributes a detailed report on an interesting Evangelical manuscript from the holdings of the National Library, the authors Miroslav Koudela and Petr Mašek have attempted a reconstruction of the previously unknown library of Veit Ulrich Marschall von Ebnet, and Kristina Kaucká has considered the fate of the library at Mikulov Chateau in the inter-war period.

The exhibition „Balloons and the Art of Aerial Navigation“

The Academy of Sciences Library would like to invite you to the exhibition “Balloons and the Art of Aerial Navigation” in the entry area of the study from 31 October to 31 December 2014. The exhibition presents aeronautic literature from the historical collection of the Academy of Sciences Library. The library holds almost seventy works on this topic from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
